Today matters

Bridget has never obtained her milestones on time. There are some milestones we will never be able to record. Rather than dwell on those unattainable moments, I focus on the unique to Bridget milestones. Ones we never expected and the ones she worked so hard to accomplish.

Last week we had an epic milestone. Well, three milestones wrapped into a big one.

It was a normal afternoon. David, Bridget and I were hanging out in the kitchen. He chuckled over something, I do not know what, exactly. Bridget was watching her IPad, engrossed in the Tinkerbelle movie (sidebar: have you seen Legend of the Neverbeast? If not, watch it now). Out of nowhere a brand new milestone is obtained when we hear:

“What’s funny, dad?”

I know, you are thinking I am reaching when I chart this as a milestone. Yet here is why I am counting this not as one milestone but three:

  1. Bridget was paying attention to her surroundings
  2. She connected laughing to funny
  3. She didn’t understand what was funny so she asked why using a complete sentence! (Technically that could be counted as an additional milestone, but I won’t be greedy)

I never expect these moments to take me by surprise. Well, that is not exactly true. I know Bridget will continue to things in her own time, that her milestones will be as unique as my beautiful daughter. I will continue to wait for that unexpected surprise. I will feel guilty that I do not pay as much heed to Abby’s milestones. Don’t ask me when she first sat up, said I love you or jumped. I will rationalize my inattentiveness by stating the relationships are as different as the children. I will excuse myself since I will attend every one of Abby’s concerts knowing that Bridget will never have one. There will be moments that I feel completely inept at parenting either of the girls.

But today I rejoice and celebrate Bridget’s unique milestone. Because today matters.

Today absolutely matters! What an awesome triple header :). Thanks, too, for the Tinkerbell recommendation. I still love all of those movies!

That is wonderful!! Way to go Bridget.
It is a refreshing idea to forgive ourselves for not being perfect with our kids. Thanks for that healthy reminder. I think we all need to do that. 🙂

You’ll remember Abby’s milestones too, just different ones. I couldn’t tell you when my kids did a lot of things for the first time, unless I looked it up in their baby books. And yay for Bridget! Every milestone is worth celebrating – they are one of the perks of being a mom.

OH today DOES MATTER!!!! Oh Kerri… your words! I love how real you are. And I would TOTALLY count that as a FOUR in one. 🙂

Btw- What WAS so funny anyway?

OHHHHHHHH that brought happiness to my heart. And such a lovely thing to have happen out of the blue like that. I think go for the FOUR milestones, personally.

    WHOOT! GO BRIDGET!

As for Abby…you will remember plenty, and you are MINDFUL about ensuring she knows she is every bit as important to you, within the context of how HER mother-daughter relationship happens. Like you say, they’re both different because they’re different children, and that’s FINE.

YAY! Those are huge milestones! Whoot! Seriously huge. And don’t worry so much about not knowing Abby’s milestones always…there are certain things I can’t remember including really obvious ones. Somebody asked me how long I breastfed Tucker for and I had no idea. Doh. Congratulations to Bridget and to you!! ❤
