For the love of books

I love to read. As in read anything as long as they are words. I sometimes embarrass Abby with my reading. Last week I was reading the new Rick Riordan book, Blood of Olympus. The fact that Abby’s classmates were also reading it made her question my level of maturity. The fact that I was having an involved discussion about the book with her friends upped my cool factor. At least I think it did.

She is probably still questioning my maturity level.

My Challenge: Chris

Today’s challenge is from Christine Carter. Chris is the mom of two who began blogging not only to record her children’s lives but also to bring hope and encouragement to others. I’m happy when I can do a 5k

I do not consider myself a runner. I like to run. It helps my mental state and the state of my legs. But I am in awe of those who can run and not look like they need medical attention. When I race I look to these people to keep going, to know I can finish I just might not look pretty when I do. I hope one day to become a runner. One who runs and whose husband doesn’t offer to call the rescue for oxygen (true story).

The video below is a new inspiration to me. The first person with Down Syndrome to complete the New York City Marathon.

Picture time

I am always nervous when it comes to school picture day. For years we received pictures of Bridget looking unfocused. She would look, for lack of a better word, off. Then she started her preschool/integrated program. Going to picture day with her therapist has been a God-send.

This year, with apologies to the grandmothers who will be horrified that I did not dress Bridget in appropriate school photo day dresses and bows, captures her spirit.

Last year a good friend of mine and I had a discussion about how that happens. On November 11, 2013 I posted the question: do you need permission to be you?

Losing Innocence

I knew 5th grade would be tough. I expected her to grow-up a little more. I expected her to gain some independence, start moving away from Barbies and Fairies to explore more of real-life heroes.

I expected this to change due to society. From her friends and classmates who seem to be growing up so much quicker than she seems to be. I did not expect her to lose the shine of innocence doing a Social Studies Project. Continue reading

I’m thankful for the GAP

Words I never thought I would utter. But truly, I am thankful for the GAP. Ellen at Love that Max  posted a picture on Facebook of the latest GAP add. Giving them a shout out for including a girl with cerebral palsy.

I had to blow up the add to the full-view to find her.
